About the Gun

The SW990L is a polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol using the Quick Action trigger system. It features a black polymer frame with interchangeable backstraps and an integral accessory rail, paired with a black Melonite-finished stainless steel slide. Unlike the standard SW99, it has no decocker button on the slide. Sights are adjustable three-dot. It was offered in a full-size and compact configuration across multiple calibers

Analysis

The SW990L is a late variant of the SW99 series, introduced near the end of the Smith & Wesson–Walther collaboration. It employs the Quick Action (striker single-action) trigger system—similar to the Walther P99 QA—while eliminating the top-of-slide decocker button found on earlier SW99 models. The result is a consistent trigger pull with a shorter reset, intended to appeal to users preferring a more streamlined operation. Like the rest of the SW99 family, the frame was produced by Walther in Germany and the slide/barrel by S&W in the United States. Production was brief, as Smith & Wesson was already shifting focus to the fully domestic M&P line.
