About the Gun

The SD9 and SD40 are full-size, polymer-framed, striker-fired pistols of conventional double-stack configuration. They feature a black polymer frame with aggressive texturing and a finger locator above the trigger guard, paired with a black Melonite-finished stainless steel slide. An industry-standard Picatinny accessory rail is present. The trigger is the Self Defense Trigger (SDT) design, and the standard sights consist of a tritium front sight with a fixed white two-dot rear.

Production

Production began in 2010 and ran through approximately 2011–early 2012.

Market value

MSRP at production was around $429–$530. Current used market value for examples in good to very good condition ranges $250–$350.

Analysis

Smith & Wesson introduced the SD series in 2010 as a direct evolution and replacement for the earlier Sigma line. The design retained the overall architecture and magazine compatibility of the Sigma while incorporating refinements requested for the self-defense market, including an improved trigger, standard Picatinny rail, better slide serrations, and a tritium front sight on the original models. Positioned as an affordable full-size duty-style pistol, the SD9 and SD40 bridged the gap between the budget Sigma and the higher-end M&P series. Production of the original all-black versions was relatively short before the company transitioned to the Value Enhanced (VE) models in 2012.
