About the Gun

The SP2340 is a medium-frame, polymer-framed, hammer-fired pistol that introduced SIG’s first polymer service platform. It uses a conventional double-action/single-action trigger system with a frame-mounted decocker and retains the familiar SIG control layout. The design includes interchangeable grip panels and a stainless-steel slide. It is a full-size duty pistol offered in .40 S&W and .357 SIG.

Analysis

SIG launched the SP2340 in June 1998 as its entry into the growing polymer-framed duty-pistol market dominated by Glock and others. The company intentionally retained its traditional DA/SA manual of arms and four-point safety system rather than adopting a striker-fired design, aiming to give agencies already trained on metal-framed SIG pistols an easier transition to a lighter, less expensive polymer gun. The initial focus on .40 S&W and .357 SIG reflected contemporary U.S. law-enforcement preferences for higher-pressure cartridges. The proprietary rail and rounded trigger guard mark it clearly as a first-generation Pro. It was followed the next year by the 9mm SP2009 and was later refined into the second-generation SP2022 for the large French contract. In the market the SP2340 represents the starting point of SIG’s polymer era and remains a relatively uncommon but functional example of that transitional design.
