About the Gun

The SIG Sauer Mosquito is a compact-to-medium polymer-framed, blowback-operated, hammer-fired DA/SA semi-automatic pistol chambered in .22 LR. It is aesthetically and ergonomically scaled to roughly 90 percent the size of the full-size P226, with similar control layout (including a decock lever) plus a slide-mounted ambidextrous safety. The alloy slide rides on a polymer frame that includes an accessory rail under the dust cover. Standard single-stack magazines hold 10 rounds. Configurations included the base model with shorter barrel, a longer-barreled Sport version, and threaded-barrel variants (typically M9 x 0.75) intended for suppressor use, along with multiple finish options such as solid black, two-tone, reverse two-tone, and various colored or patterned special editions.

Analysis

SIG introduced the Mosquito to give shooters a lower-cost, low-recoil platform that closely duplicated the handling and control arrangement of its centerfire P-series pistols, primarily for training, transition practice, and recreational use. Development and production were subcontracted to German Sport Guns (GSG). The design prioritized familiar SIG ergonomics in a rimfire package, but the zinc-alloy slide and blowback system proved sensitive to ammunition (high-velocity loads generally cycled more reliably than standard-velocity). Quality and reliability feedback contributed to SIG’s decision to discontinue the model under its branding. GSG continued a near-identical version as the Firefly after SIG stopped imports. Threaded-barrel and specialty-finish variants expanded the lineup for suppressor users and those seeking different aesthetics without altering the core operating system.
