About the Gun

The Bersa Model 86 is a compact all-steel DA/SA blowback pistol in .380 Auto with a widened grip frame that accepts a double-stack magazine. It uses an external hammer, a slide-mounted safety/decock lever, black wrap-around rubber grips, and low-profile fixed sights. The standard finish is matte black; a nickel-plated version was also offered.

Analysis

The Model 86 was the high-capacity counterpart to the Model 85, differing mainly in its black wrap-around rubber grips and matte-black finish option. Both models used the same widened steel frame and double-stack magazine well on the DA/SA blowback platform that Bersa had developed for the Model 83 and Model 85. Production overlapped the final years of those models and ended in the mid-1990s as Bersa moved to the lighter alloy-frame Series 95 and then the Thunder 380. The Model 86 was aimed at civilian defensive and export markets that preferred rubber grips and a higher magazine capacity in a compact steel .380 Auto. Surviving examples appear on the used market alongside the Model 85 as heavier, higher-capacity alternatives to the single-stack Model 83.

Bersa Model 86 Update

I have one of these bought used in 1998 s/n:2074xx with 1 OEM blued mag and 1 OEM nickle plated, both are 13 round capacity. The 2 white dot rear sight is screw click adjustable for windage. Markings on the right side of the SLIDE are: K-MAX INT. INC. GLENVIEW ILLINOIS 60025 Markings on the left side of the SLIDE are: BERSA (in an oval) S.A. RAMOS MEJIA ARGENTINA MOD. 86 CAL. .380 ACP On the left side of the FRAME it is marked: 2074xx INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA There is no magazine disconnect. (the gun will fire without the magazine). There is no external slide stop.which I feel would be helpful at the shooting range, but not for the simplicity of less stuff on the gun to snag during carrying concealed or otherwise. I'm not a big fan of decocker location on the slide, but what are ya gonna do? Too small for me to easily disengage on this DA/SA gun. My gun is going to need a new recoil spring as bulging of fired cases is showing up more than in the past.
