About the Gun

Compact double-stack rotating-barrel pistol with an alloy frame and a short steel slide. The 8040F is DA/SA: exposed hammer and ambidextrous slide-mounted safety/decock lever. Checkered black plastic grips and fixed three-dot sights. The barrel is hard-chromed. Finish is matte black Bruniton.

Analysis

Beretta designed the Cougar around .40 S&W, so the 8040 is the original chambering of the series. The F configuration is the standard DA/SA gun and outlasted the DAO 8040D. Italian production of this full-size .40 S&W F ended in the mid-2000s. Used 8040F guns sit under 9 mm F Cougars because .40 S&W demand is softer. Clean Italian-marked examples with original magazines sit at the top of the range.
