About the Gun

Compact double-stack rotating-barrel pistol with an alloy frame and a short steel slide. The 8040D is double-action only: bobbed hammer, no slide-mounted safety or decocker, and a long DAO trigger for every shot. Checkered black plastic grips and fixed three-dot sights. The barrel is hard-chromed. Finish is matte black Bruniton.

MSRP at production was around $650. Current used market value for examples in good to very good condition ranges $350–$550.

Analysis

Beretta designed the Cougar around .40 S&W and cataloged the 8040 as that original chambering. The D configuration is the DAO police-spec gun: spurless hammer and no manual safety. Utah Highway Patrol adopted the 8040D in 1996 after replacing the H&K P7. Blue Book ends D production in 2000; F-model 8040s continued a few years longer. Used 8040D guns trade below F Cougars because of the DAO trigger and softer .40 S&W demand. Clean Italian-marked examples with original magazines sit at the top of the range.
