About the Gun

Compact double-stack rotating-barrel pistol with an alloy frame and a short steel slide. The 8000D is double-action only: bobbed hammer, no slide-mounted safety or decocker, and a long DAO trigger for every shot. Checkered black plastic grips and fixed three-dot sights. The barrel is hard-chromed.

Production ran from 1995 through 2000.

Market value

MSRP at production was around $650. Current used market value for examples in good to very good condition ranges $400–$550.

Analysis

Beretta introduced the Cougar in 1994 as a more compact locked-breech companion to the 92. The series was designed around .40 S&W and then issued in 9 mm. A rotating barrel locks the breech instead of the 92’s falling block. The D configuration is the DAO police-spec gun: spurless hammer and no manual safety. Some U.S. departments authorized it for off-duty and backup carry. Blue Book ends D production in 2000; F-model Cougars continued a few years longer. Later Mini, L, Inox, 8040, 8045, and Stoeger-marked guns are separate models. Used 8000D pistols are less sought than F guns because of the DAO trigger. Clean Italian-marked examples with original magazines sit at the top of the range.
