About the Gun

The Thompson Custom 1911 is a Government-size 1911-style single-action pistol with a stainless slide, checkered laminate grips with a Thompson medallion, front and rear slide serrations, a beavertail grip safety, and low-profile sights. The standard gun uses a stainless frame; the Lightweight uses an anodized aluminum frame.

Production ran from 2004 through 2017.

Market value

MSRP at production was around $750. Current used market value for examples in good to very good condition ranges $550–$750.

Analysis

Auto-Ordnance introduced the Thompson Custom in 2004 as item 1911C / 1911TC, the upgraded companion to the plain GI-pattern 1911A1 line. The stainless gun used a cast frame and a billet slide with the Thompson bullet logo, checkered front strap, beavertail, and laminate medallion grips. An aluminum-frame Lightweight followed in 2005 and lasted only through 2007. Stainless production ran into 2017, with a pause after a short 2008 run and a later 1911TC return using more MIM parts. Later engraved commemoratives used this stainless platform as a base. Used Customs trade above a plain GI Auto-Ordnance 1911; the short-run Lightweight is scarcer but is not a separate collector category.
