About the Gun

The P99 was developed for law enforcement, security forces and the civilian shooting market as a replacement for the Walther P5 and the P88. It is a striker-fired pistol with a polymer frame and 'Tenifer' treated steel slide. The polymer grip has interchangeable palmswells. The P99 striker-fired action is unique in that operates in a double-action (DA/SA) mode similar to that of hammer-fired pistols. The P99 QA variant is a striker single-action (SA) trigger similar to the Glock. The P99 DAO variant employs a classic double-action only long trigger pull. Also unique to the P99 is a decocking button recessed into the top of the slide, rather than a conventional lever usually found on the side. Other features include an integrated accessory rail and both a loaded chamber and a cocked status indicator.

About the Cartridge

This cartridge was introduced along with the Luger semi-automatic pistol. The pistol and cartridge was first adopted by the German Navy in 1904 and then by the German Army in 1908. This cartridge has since been adopted by the military of practically every non-Communist power. It has become the most popular and widely-used handgun cartridge in the world. Performance wise, the 9 mm cartridge has somewhat more power than the .38 Special but falls well short of the .357 Magnum.

S&W/Walther variant

Walther and Smith & Wesson collaborated on the S&W model 99 with Walther producing the polymer frame and S&W the slide. The model 99 doesn’t have the rail, but in all other aspects seems identical to the P99. DA trigger pull is smooth and light enough for women who had trouble with other (DAO) small-frame autos. The SA trigger requires only a slight forward movement to reset and is crisp on firing. Due to the double-stack 10 round magazine it’s a little wider than the micro 9’s. All in all, it’s exactly what you’d expect to come out of a collaboration between two of the world’s premier gun makers.
