About the Cartridge

In 1974, SAAMI established standards for a .38 Special cartridge with a gunpowder load that generated a higher firing pressure than the standard cartridge. Designated with a +P suffix, this cartridge has a significant, but not huge, increase in performance over the standard .38 Special cartridge.

Excellent choice for over 40 years... 2" S&W 64-2
By EEResQ on 09 Dec 2022
I've owned and periodically CC'd a factory bobbed 2" S&W 64-2 DAO since 1981. It's one of the most accurate snubies I own. For the first 30 years, it was loaded with Winchester - Western .38 Special +P LSWC-HP 158 grain (the old FBI load). Around 2011, started evaluating the new .38 Special +P ammo designed for 'Short Barrel Revolvers'. In 2012 settled on Speer 'Gold Dot' Duty Ammo, .38 Special +P 135 grain JHP, 'For Short Barrel Revolvers' (53921). This ammo and the 2" S&W 64-2 DAO makes for a great EDC. "Beware the confident old man who regularly carries a snubnose .38... You can bet he knows where and how to effectively deliver its load." Author, MHB
