About the Cartridge

This cartridge was developed by John Browning and was adopted by the United States Ordnance Department along with the Colt-Browning automatic pistol in 1911. It has also been made the official military handgun chambering by several other governments, notably Argentina, Mexico and Norway. The 45 Automatic is the most powerful military handgun cartridge in use today. This is a heavy and powerful sub-sonic round. Although its muzzle energy can exceed 400 ft-lbs, its velocity and bullet weight creates a steep trajectory curve that limits its effective range to self-defense distances.

My police Carry Gun for several years
By Nomad1820 on 10 May 2021
I carried an Astra A-100 as a duty and off duty weapon for the last several years of my Police Career. She served me well and was quit a comfortable carry weapon in my nylon duty gear. I easily qualified either 1st or 2nd for the department and our local SO as well as a neighboring Department who gathered with us on qualification day. The only officer who outshot me was the High Sheriff of our County, embarrassingly using an old S&W Military and Police that had long ago lost all it's bluing because of it's age. Of course the Sheriff had been in office for over 35 years and shot his old revolver at least once a week, just to keep in practice he used to say. I still have the pistol and even after years of sitting on my hip, providing me with protection that I could and did rely on, she looks almost new. That nylon doesn't wear on the muzzles like the old leather we used to wear for duty on the PD.
