About the Gun

Features similar to the Automag III and IV, but chambered for the .50 Action Express cartridge. Browning tilting barrel locking system, magazine release button is located on the left side of the frame just behind the trigger. The slide mounted safety simply blocks the firing pin whether the gun is cocked or not and does not lock the trigger.

Analysis

The Automag V in .50 AE generates substantial muzzle energy (often exceeding 1,400–1,500 ft-lbs with 300 gr loads at velocities around 1,400–1,530 fps), suitable for specialized applications like big-game hunting at moderate ranges or silhouette shooting, with flat trajectory and heavy impact out to 50 yards. Recoil is moderate to severe, even with the pistol's mass and ported barrel aiding control, though muzzle flip and impulse remain pronounced compared to lighter calibers. Accuracy in tested examples reaches sub-2-inch groups at 25 yards with consistent ammunition. Reliability hinges on thorough lubrication to minimize galling on stainless components, with occasional feeding or ejection issues linked to load variations, dirt in the open slide area, or high-pressure dynamics. Production was extremely limited (planned for 3,000 units serialized "1 of 3000" to "3000 of 3000," but actual output fell well short, likely under 2,000 based on observed serials), confined to original AMT (Irwindale, CA) from 1993 to 1995 with no confirmed Galena Industries extension or continuation. This scarcity, combined with its status as one of the few semi-autos in .50 AE (distinct from gas-operated designs like the Desert Eagle), drives collector interest despite niche practical use due to ammunition cost and availability.
